Princeton University Art Museum opens with Smartify digital guide

The new Princeton University Art Museum has officially opened its doors, with Smartify’s digital visitor guide helping audiences discover its extraordinary collection.
The spectacular building, at the heart of Princeton’s historic campus, houses artworks that span the globe and thousands of years of creativity.
The Museum’s design favours light, open galleries that encourage visitors to explore at their own pace, making it an ideal environment for Smartify’s digital interpretation.

Primarily, the Smartify platform solved a particularly vexing challenge for the Museum: meeting its goal of having object information available to visitors for every single work on view, including very dense displays of artworks where printed labels were not feasible.
Through a custom-branded web app that works on every device with no download required, Smartify delivered a robust, yet user-friendly solution for this problem and others in the new galleries.

Our dynamic integration with the Museum’s collection management system means content is always accurate and up-to-date. And the Museum plans to roll out exciting additional Smartify features, including object recognition software and audio tours, after opening.
Visitors can listen to descriptions in their own language, through our AI-powered text-to-speech technology that’s improving accessibility at museums worldwide.
They can also:
- Explore the Museum’s collection by theme such as American art or photography
- Get provenance information for every artwork, as part of the Museum’s commitment to ongoing research and transparency
- Plan their visit and discover upcoming exhibitions

Museum Director James Steward emphasises Princeton’s belief “that a museum can and should play a fundamental role in the education of future generations” – a vision that’s shared by Smartify.
By putting rich context directly in their hands, our platform lets visitors explore at their own pace, following their curiosity from ancient ceramics to contemporary paintings.
We’re excited to see what stories visitors will uncover with Smartify!
